Huron County Furniture Stores

Huron County, Michigan

Huron County, Michigan is a county in the northern most tip of the thumb and as of the 2010 census, had 33,118 citizens. The county seat is the city of Bad Axe which itself has a population of around 3,000 residents. The county is a peninsula that is surrounded on three sides by the Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. There is roughly 100 miles of coastline in Huron County stretching from Saginaw Bay on the west side to Lake Huron on the north and east sides. Although it is a very beautiful part of the state, tourism is not the areas greatest draw that would be farming. The first known inhabitants of the area were the Sauk Indians which were later replaced by the Ojibwa. The Ojibwa were here when the French, the first European settlers, first came to the area in the late 1600’s. This gave the French claim to the area and they kept it until the French and Indian War at which time the area became owned by the British. Years later the land that would become Michigan was granted to the colony of Virginia. The word Huron comes from the French word Hures which means heads. The area was given this name because the Indians head dresses were so big and flamboyant that the French called the area Huron after them. Later the word would become used in connection with the Great Lakes and the Native Americans. Huron County is a very beautiful area with lots of great places and people to see. It’s not only a great place to live, but also a wonderful place to vacation. For this reason, many people live here year round and many people just have vacation homes here as well. Whether you’re here for the whole year or just a portion of it, we promise that you will love Huron County. Lapeer County Furniture Stores

The Lapeer County Courthouse was built by Alvin N. Hart, one of Lapeer's first settlers. Born in Connecticut in 1804, Hart came to Michigan in 1831 and platted the village of Lapeer two years later. He also served as sheriff and as a member of both houses of the state legislature. Although the date in the pediment, 1839, marks the construction of the county's first courthouse, this building was erected in 1845-46 and bought by the county in 1853. It is an impressive Greek Revival structure. The two-story exterior is of native white pine, supported by a brick foundation. The facade of the full-height portico has four fluted Doric columns supporting the pediment. A three-tiered tower rises at the rear of the building. The Lapeer County Courthouse is now the oldest courthouse in Michigan which serves its original purpose. It remains a fine example of the dignified Doric style.
